The Lady or the Tiger?
First, I would like to reorganize the story which is told in the Paragraph 1 to 6.
There was a semi-barbaric king. He has a dream which he thought was ideal. He wanted to build a arena where was the justice was highest. When people were accused of a crime, he would be sent into the arena and did a choice to decide he was guilt or innocent.
One day he found his princess was falling love with a subject. He was angry and put the subject in prison immediately. Then the handsome and brave young man would face a choice: the lady or the tiger?
It is really a familiar story to us and is interesting. Although I heard it when I was still young, many thoughts still came up when I read it today.
Now let’s talk about the king in the story.
This is really a violent king in my opinion. First, his method is really cruel. He wanted to be fair in his kingdom and the guilt will be punished in a strict way if it is serious enough. Then I think the method is really silly. If he had found the guilt was serious enough, the subject can be sentenced to death already. It is unnecessary to give a chance to the guilt person to escape from the punishment. And the rate the one can escape is high as 50 percent. In other word, if he can found someone is innocent, why the innocent person has to take the risk of being eaten by a terrible, hungry tiger. It is not decide by the justice and God but only luck of the one who is in the arena.
And the in his kingdom, fair is not justified by most of people but only himself. He said it was fair. So it was fair. One of the element of the punishment is the guilt is serious enough. Is it serious enough if someone just falling love with the princess? Yes, because the king though it was most serious. Because of his foolish and selfish idea, the young man had to take the risk.
The lady and the tiger were not only in the cages of the arena but also in the heart of the king. His mind is the definition of the justice and fair. He can give the punishment in his mind to make him feel good. But the young man can only accept it. Maybe he will die because he opened the tiger cage. Or he cannot be happy because he love the princess but he had to marry another woman. All of these owe to the cruel and foolish king.
